Benicia Parks and Recreation has approved a nine-hole disc golf course in the open space between Lake Herman and Community Park. The proposal was made by the Benicia Disc Golf Club, which guaranteed funding for all equipment and provide the manpower to build and install tee boxes and the elevated baskets that are the equivalent of the holes on a regular golf course.
Disc golf, also known as Frisbee golf, resembles its older and more well-known cousin in a couple of ways.
First, players start each hole at a tee box and try to get their disc, often called a Frisbee, into a hole, in this case a basket about 4 and a half feet off the ground, with the fewest tosses. Those looking for a manicured lawn reminiscent of Pebble Beach should probably go to Monterey.
The Benicia disc golf course will occupy a space between the northern boundary of Community Park and Lake Herman but will not really alter the existing landscape other than the tee boxes. Environmental impacts are expected to be minimal. The most notable impact will be from foot traffic as golfers move from one hole to another.
Proponents say this impact can be minimized by moving hole locations though they also feel that the footpaths created by the players will cut down on the time required of Parks and Rec staff to maintain the trails. Visual impacts are expected to be minimal as well because the tees are at ground level and will be visible only from a short distance.
According to the proposal from the Benicia Disc Golf Club, the course will be open to the pubic year-round and will be free. For more information on frisbee golf try these sites:
